$1 BILLION GENERATED FOR CONSERVATION – In 2019, outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds generated nearly $1 billion for wildlife conservation. The American model of wildlife conservation has certainly worked well over the last 83 years. In 1937 the Pittman-Robertson Act was approved by Congress with the purpose of conserving wildlife. Wildlife Restoration Act Federal Aid allowed funding to go to state agencies. An 11% tax on firearms, sporting goods, and archery equipment generates a large portion of the funding. Additionally, the Pittman-Robertson Act also gives state wildlife departments the ability to afford hunter education programs. Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt distributes the funds through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
“Our conservation model is funded and supported by America’s hunters, shooters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts. These stewards of conservation generated nearly a billion dollars last year alone and make our country’s conservation legacy the envy of the world,” said Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt.
Billions of Dollars for Conservation
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has distributed more than $22.9 billion in grant money for wildlife projects. $7.6 billion has been directly raised by state wildlife agencies primarily by the sale of hunting and fishing licenses. Earlier this year the Department of Interior released $3.2 million to 12 western states to help wildlife conservation. Consequently, showing that the model is working well.
“When people pay taxes and fees, they want to know that their money is going to good use,” said Deputy Secretary of the Interior Katharine MacGregor. “These grants are a great example of fees paid by sportsmen and [sports]women being reinvested in opportunities for hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreation opportunities. We are proud to work with the states and appreciate their efforts to keep public lands open for dispersed recreation where appropriate for those who need to get outside.”
The American conservation model is the gold standard and the numbers continue to prove it. With nearly $1 billion generated for conservation, wildlife can continue to flourish. Amazingly, nearly every North American animal has seen a population increase since the Model was adopted. It continues you to be one of the greatest success stories in conservation. Most importantly, it all comes from hunters and fishermen like you. Without people like you, we may not have the amazing wildlife we all enjoy. So, in closing keep up the good work everyone.
