The Axis deer application period will open soon in Hawaii. The online application process for an Axis deer/Mouflon sheep combo permit will open on Jan. 10th, 2022. A non-refundable $10 application fee is due at the time of applying for the hunting permits. Likewise, a game mammal tag fee will be assessed to the hunter once they draw the permits. The mammal tag costs $20 for Hawaiʻi residents and $125 for non-Hawaiʻi residents.

There are four different hunting seasons for these animals. Below we will list each hunts weapon type and dates.

*Notice* all of these hunts are subject to limited participation for non-Lānaʻi residents.
  1. The General Rifle Hunt will be held over 18 consecutive weeks and open on Wednesdays through Sundays, the season will run from June 22nd – Oct. 23rd.
  2. Secondly, the Youth Hunt will be open from Wednesday through Sunday, June 8th – 12th.
  3. The Archery Hunt will be held over two 9-day periods with two draws. The first draw hunt will run May 14th – 22nd. The second draw hunt will run from May 28th – June 5th.
  4. Lastly, the Muzzleloader Hunt will be open from Wednesday through Sunday, June 15th-19th.

As stated above all four hunts will be subject to a lottery drawing. There will be no standby hunting opportunities for the four hunts.

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife would like to remind hunters that due to COVID-19, the 2022 Lānaʻi Axis Deer and Mouflon Sheep hunting season could be changed, postponed, or modified. Likewise, hunters must follow all federal, state, and county COVID-19 restrictions/guidelines.

The bag limit for Axis deer will be three animals: two does and one deer of either sex. The bag limit for Mouflon sheep will be four: two ewes, one Mouflon sheep of either sex and one non-typical ram.
