This was one of the last photos taken of Morty in the winter range of Western Wyoming. A combination of the rut and the brutal early winters of Wyoming can really take its toll on mule deer. Most deer start to funnel towards the winter range in late October in preparation for the November Rut. A lot of the bigger antlered deer will start to shed their antlers around the new year. Those couple of months can really hurt the health of even a true legend. Here is a body comparison of him towards the beginning of the rut.

All these deer roamed public land in Western Wyoming, most never being taken by a hunter. Many deer in this series will have several years of their photos. When coming up with a name for this series of photos we used a spin-off of one of our favorite movies, The Sandlot.
