Wisconsin’s two Senators are looking to reverse a judge’s recent ruling that reinstated gray wolf protection in much of the US.
As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Republican Ron Johnson and Democrat Tammy Baldwin have come together to create a bill that will look to reverse the federal judges ruling made last month. Here at Ehuntr we reported on this wolf ruling, you can find that original article by clicking here.
Wisconsin residents should have a say in wolf management. – Senator Ron Johnson
The Senators introduced this bill in the first week of March. Since that time, Wyoming Senators Cynthia Lummis and John Barrasso have joined them in supporting the bill.
I believe the wolf population is strong and federal officials should let the state manage the animal. – Tammy Baldwin
The ruling from the judge put gray wolves back on the Engaged Species List in many areas of the US. The only area the wolves were not put back on the endangered species list was the Northwestern Rockies Area. This means that under this new ruling wolf hunting and wolf management in Wisconsin and other upper mid-west states are no longer allowed. Likewise, this means that farmers and ranchers can no longer kill wolves that are attacking their livestock.
Wolf Management in Wisconsin
Wolf management in Wisconsin has been a muddy topic since the Trump Administration removed wolves from the endangered species list. Hunter Nation sued the state stating that the division of wildlife wasn’t following its duty by putting the wolf hunt on hold. As a result, the state held its first wolf season. From that point onward, several organizations have filed lawsuits against the state to ban wolf hunting and/or close future seasons. These motions in Wisconsin are not atypical as several states around the country have seen similar battles for wolf management. We will do our best to follow this story and report back and new information regarding this bill.
