The Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks (FWP) has reported that the new Upland Game Bird Regulations have been released for 2022.
These new regulations for game birds are available online which can be found by clicking here. Printed regulation booklets will be made available later this month.
This year these booklets will now include turkey regulations. A turkey is considered an upland game bird by Montana statute.
The FWP Commission approved hunting regulations for the 2022-2023 seasons at a Feb. 4th meeting. As a result, the final regulations approved at the meeting went into effect when the new license year began on March 1st.
Some of the new regulations are as follows:
- Hunting and fishing licenses are now accessible through a secure and convenient mobile app. The Montana MyFWP app provides a digital wallet to store and display licenses and digital carcass tags, known as E-Tags, that can validate your harvest in the field.
- Also, turkey hunting in Region 4 has changed to a general license spring opportunity.
- Likewise, Fall turkey and mountain grouse may be taken with a .177 caliber air rifle shooting a performance ballistic alloy pellet at least 1,250 feet per second as specified by the manufacturer. These two game birds can also be taken by a .22 caliber air rifle shooting a performance ballistic alloy pellet at least 950 feet per second as specified by the manufacturer.
Every two years the FWP Commission looks at upland game bird regulations along with other hunting regulations to make changes and approvals. As a result, most hunting regulations in Montana changed slightly every two years. It is important that hunters read through the regulations each year. By doing this hunters will protect themselves from accidentally going against the regulations.
