A hiker has been attacked in Wyoming. The Francs Peak trail is part of the Absaroka mountain range that runs 160 miles from Livingston Montana and heads south towards Dubois Wyoming. Francs Peak is the highest peak in the range and generally sees a decent amount of hikers.

On Monday, June 27th, a 68-year-old man, from New York, was hiking the Francs Peak trail when the attack occurred. The hiker, who was carrying bear spray, apparently surprised the bear and it attacked before the man could use the bear spray. The injuries sustained were severe enough that the man had to be flown out of the area to a hospital in Billings Montana where he was treated. the investigation is still ongoing. However, based on the information gathered so far, WGFD has no plans regarding management action at this time. Likewise, the WGFD has stated that they will monitor bear activity in the area and will make management decisions if it is deemed necessary for public safety.

The WGFD would like to remind the public that they should always stay alert in bear country. You should look out for bear signs such as tracks and scat, make plenty of noise while hiking, and carry bear spray or a firearm for protection.
