WHICH BROADHEAD IS THE BEST? – This is a question I’ve been asking myself for the past couple months. There are so many broadheads out there, but which one is the best for hunting big game? I’ve had broadheads in the past that have worked perfectly. However, I’ve had several that haven’t performed at all. Let’s dive in to my thought process and start a discussion.
The Cause Behind the Dilemma
On my recent trip to New Zealand to hunt red stag, I was able to harvest an awesome stag. The trip was absolutely amazing, and not much went wrong. However, my only concern I had with the shot was that the arrow didn’t pass through the stag completely. When I shot him, he was only 28 yards away from the blind. With a 70 pound bow, the arrow should’ve passed through with ease. It caught on the fletchings on the way out, and the deer carried my arrow 250 yards away when he finally laid down and died.
I also recently finished my Utah general season mule deer hunt. It was a fun hunt, and I was able to chase some awesome deer. The main deer that I had focused on never gave me a shot, but I still had fun chasing him. On the last week of the hunt, I was finally able to make it happen on a pretty cool 3×4 buck. He was at 40 yards when I let the arrow fly, and he only ran about 100 yards before I watched him fall over. Sadly, as he was standing there about to fall down, I could see the arrow fletchings sticking out of the entrance hole. The arrow again didn’t pass completely through. Ultimately, I wasn’t able to locate that buck as he got up and ran away.
Which Broadhead Should I Use?
I’m not necessarily at a crossroads and have to change broadhead, but I think it’s time to see what else is out there. I’m currently using the Razortip broadhead from Grim Reaper. I’ve had success in the past with it, but these last two situations have me scratching my head. Previously, I’ve used other broadheads, such as the Muzzy 3 blade and the Rage Hypodermic. Both worked well, but I found issues with them. I also found issues with the other broadheads I’ve used in the past. So, it makes me ask the question, is the perfect broadhead out there?
I have good friends that are using a couple different broadheads as well. One of them is using the Ironwill. Another friend recommends the Bloodsport. Again, both have advantages, but are they the perfect broadhead?
