ACTIVISTS SUE FOR REVIEW OF GRIZZLY BEAR PROTECTIONS – U.S. Officials will be evaluating whether enough protections are in place for grizzly bears in the lower 48. Advocates sued the government in hopes to restore the animals to more areas of the U.S. Court documents were filed on Monday, Dec. 9, 2019. The lead attorney on the case is Kristina Akland of Missoula, Montana.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service did not cede to review the status of grizzly restoration. The review could lay the groundwork for expanded restoration plans. However, USF&W has not commented. If one wonder’s how the grizzly population is faring in the U.S., here are a few references:

Chris Servheen, former coordinator of the government’s grizzly bear recovery program, stated:

“It just doesn’t make sense to look for new places for bears. We don’t have enough money to deal with the existing areas we have.”

Yellowstone National Park is even open about grizzly recovery.

“Grizzlies have made a remarkable recovery. The growth and expansion of the grizzly bear population in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) is a remarkable conservation success story.”

Grizzly protections have a colorful history of indecisiveness. The U.S. government has been in in a repetitive state of gee and haw response to special interest groups and the State’s rights to manage wildlife. Montana Public Radio published an exhaustive history of grizzly bear protections earlier this year.

Grizzly bears have been largely protected in the lower 48 and classified as a “threatened” species. Historically, grizzlies ranged from the far reaches of the arctic into central Mexico. Now, their southern range extends into Wyoming. Including parts of Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington host an estimated 1,900 grizzlies.

Are grizzlies doing well enough as-is?
