APPLY FOR UTAH SPORTSMAN’S TAGS – Hunters are always looking for premium hunts to go on at a discounted price. Not many people can afford to go on once-in-a-lifetime hunt. For this reason, state’s offer premium hunts that hunters can apply for each year. In Utah, these tags are called the Sportsman’s Tag.
What is the Sportsman’s Tag
The Sportsman’s tags are coveted tags for Utah residents. Yes, these tags are for residents of Utah only. If you’re lucky enough to get one of these tags, you will be able to hunt most every unit in the state for the species of which you draw the tag.
“If you draw a sportsman permit, you can hunt on almost every unit in Utah that’s open to hunting the species you drew a permit for,” DWR Wildlife Licensing Coordinator Lindy Varney said. “Also, the season dates are much longer, so you’ll have more time to scout different places to harvest an animal. It’s the hunt of a lifetime.”
The Utah DWR offers Sportsman’s tags for many different species. The species include:
- Bison
- Black bear
- Buck deer
- Buck pronghorn
- Bull elk
- Bull moose
- Cougar
- Desert bighorn sheep
- Mountain goat
- Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep
- Wild turkey
How to Apply for the Sportsman’s Tag
As mentioned above, you have to be a Utah resident to apply for these tags. Applicants must also be 12 years old, except for with wild turkey. Hunters must also possess a valid hunting license or combination license.
The fee for the tags can range from $35 to $513, depending on the species that you draw. There are no bonus points or preference points earned for this application like there is for the general hunting draw in Utah. In other words, this is a level playing field. Everyone comes into this draw system with the same chances.
The application period for these tags opened on Oct. 19th, 2022 and will run through Nov. 9th.
