The Utah big game application period is now open. The application period opened on Jan. 27th and will run until March 3rd. Applying during the application period is the only way to have a chance of drawing some of Utah’s most coveted permits. You can apply for these permits by going to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources website by clicking here. Likewise, you can apply by phone by calling the nearest DWR regional office.
Results will be made available at least a month or two after the application period closes. Results are typically released no later than May 31st. Most hunters will be notified via email. However, can also get the drawing results online or by calling 1-800-221-0659.
During this application period, you can apply for the following species:
- One of three Limited Entry Species. Those three species are Elk, Pronghorn, and Mule Deer.
- General Season Mule Deer
- One of five Once-in-a-Lifetime Species. Those five species are Moose, Mountain Goat, Bison, Desert Bighorn Sheep, and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep.
You can also purchase preference points without actually applying for hunts during this period.
If you are interested in hunting in a new area or are just starting out you can also check out the Utah Hunt Planner. The Utah Hunt Planner is an interactive, online map that provides valuable information from DWR biologists to help answer a lot of those questions. This Hunt Planner is a valuable tool when researching new hunts in Utah. Typically the unit information found within the Hunt Planner will include things like Public land information, how to access these public lands and locations that have historically held animals.
