COW ELK FOUND POACHED AND DOMESTIC COW SHOT- Officials with the Idaho Fish and Game Department (IDFG) are investigating the poaching of a cow elk on private land within unit 29, near the town of Leadore. The elk was shot and left to waste. In addition, a domestic cow in the same general area was found wounded by a bullet. Officials euthanized the cow to end its’ suffering and are now investigating the incident
While poaching is unfortunately a fairly common offense, it remains highly confusing as to why a domestic cow was shot. From the information at hand, it seems that both of these animals were shot “for fun.” According to the IDFG’s press release, “Ethical hunters and non-hunters alike should be outraged by these senseless crimes.”
Investigators conducted a thorough investigation at each location. However, their main hope is to gain additional information through eyewitnesses and other members of the public. According to Chad Wipperman, officials are specifically wanting to speak with anyone who was “near Purcell Lane and Big Eight Mile Road” on the morning of November 27.
Citizens Against Poaching (CAP) is currently offering a reward for information leading to the resolution of this case. Citizens are encouraged to call 1-800-632-5999, and may wish to remain anonymous. Additionally, those with information can contact the IDFG Salmon office at 208-756-2271 during their normal business hours.
Poaching is an act that degrades the hunting community’s reputation. It is true that the great majority of hunters are law-abiding individuals. However, when crimes like this happen, it hurts the population of hunters as a whole. This is why it is ever important that we as hunters work together to bring justice to those who have no respect for the law or for wildlife.
How can poaching better be prevented? Why do you believe such acts are committed?
