The Idaho Fish and Game Commission has amended the wolf hunting season dates. The newly approved Idaho wolf season will now start July 1st. This date change is consistent with the legislation that was passed during the spring session, SB1211.
This change will not be made in the printed 2021 Big Game Seasons and Rules brochure. However, an updated version of the brochure will be available online on July 1st. You can check out the IFGD website by clicking here.
SB1211 drastically changes the way the state manages wolves. Firstly, it makes the trapping season open year-round on private property. Secondly, it allows hunters to purchase unlimited wolf permits. Thirdly, it allows wolves to be taken in the same manner as both foxes and coyotes.
“It’s been widely, but inaccurately, reported that the new law will reduce Idaho’s wolf population by 90 percent. However, the Commission’s action will reduce wolf conflicts while maintaining a viable wolf population that is not subject to relisting under the federal Endangered Species Act.” – Fish and Game Director Ed Schriever
Wolf hunting season on public land remains unchanged. But, hunters can use the expanded hunting methods from Nov. 15th through March 31st.
More SB1211 Changes
Below we will list a few other changes that SB1211 will make to Idaho wolf hunting.
- Motorized Vehicle Restrictions no longer apply to wolf hunting.
- Hunting wolves over bait is now allowed on private land, landowner permission required.
- Dogs can now be used to pursue wolves. No hound hunting licenses are required.
- Weapon restrictions no longer apply while hunting wolves.
- Hunters can now hunt wolves at night. Likewise, Spotlights and night vision equipment are allowed.
These changes look to lower the overall wolf population to a more manageable level. Over the last several months, different groups have argued for and against the litigation on wolves. Some groups have even threatened lawsuits if the wolf hunting changes were implemented.
