This year I was fortunate enough to be part of several big game harvests, but the hunt with my daughter topped them all. I wasn’t about to sit out on a mule deer hunt this year so I decided to plan a little weekend hunting trip in Kansas with my youngest daughter.
Addilyne is four years old and had been asking me to take her hunting for over a year. She is no stranger to the hunting lifestyle as I drag her along on all my scouting trips, but this was the first time I took her on a deer hunt. We had been practicing in the mornings while we did our chores by sneaking up on big imaginary deer and being quiet until we were close enough to take our shot.
The first night we put a great stalk on a big old buck. We were just waiting for him to cross over the fence onto our family’s farm. After patiently waiting for 10 minutes she says to me…” Daddy, I’m tired let’s go back to the Camper”. As hard as it was to leave this buck I wanted her to have a great experience. So we turned around and headed back.
The next morning we woke up early and headed back out in hopes of finding another deer. It didn’t take long before we glassed up a few deer feeding out in the field. After loading up my precious cargo in my pack we were headed off to fill our tag.
Out of all the hunts I’ve been on this past season, and all the great adventures we had. This hunt with my daughter was hands down my favorite hunt of the year. Get those kids outside, leave your wants behind, and make it all about them. I promise you will make a lasting memory for both of you.
