Are you anxious to hunt or trap wolves in Minnesota? Well, don’t hold your breath. Current discussions on a wolf management plan are on hold.
Minnesota’s DNR says several things need to happen before a hunting season can even be thought of. First off, the state needs to complete its gray wolf management plan. This management plan is something that has been in the works for over a year and is far from completion.
MDNR’s large carnivore specialist, Dan Stark, says that the management plan is to be completed early in 2022.
“it’s expected that a 20-member Wolf Plan Advisory Committee will meet twice more this year. It’s been several weeks since the diverse group last met virtually. The first of the two meetings would focus on the hunting and trapping of wolves; the second would allow members to consider feedback from the public.” – Dan Stark.
Furthermore, the MDNR’s acting wildlife manager Mike Larson says more things need to be considered.
“We’re not talking about a season. The issue of the state potentially holding one at any point in the future is down the road. Direction for a possible future harvest season. would have to come from higher up.” – Mike Larson
Currently, there has been no update on when the meetings will resume. This pause in the effort is not going unnoticed. The Minnesota Trappers Association feels that even with the pandemic a year was plenty of time to meet virtually. In addition, the MTA also wants to make sure that their voice is being heard on the committee.
It seems that for now, Minnesota will not have a wolf season. At least for the foreseeable future.
