The Utah Sportsman Permit application period opens on Oct. 20th. These Sportsman Permits are Utah’s most prized hunting permits. The permits usually have much longer season dates and hunters can hunt almost any hunt unit with the permits. Simply put it’s the hunt of a lifetime.
Utah residents may apply for as many species as they’d like. However, only one Sportsman Permit is offered for each of the following species:
- Bull moose
- Bull elk
- Buck deer
- Bison
- Buck pronghorn
- Mountain goat
- Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep
- Desert bighorn sheep
- Wild turkey
- New for this year there are now two cougar permits. One for the 2021–22 season and one for the 2022–23 season.
Each application costs $10 for each species. Likewise, applicants can only apply once for each species. Also, applicants cannot earn or use bonus points in the Sportsman drawing.
“If you draw a sportsman permit, you can hunt on almost every unit in Utah that’s open to hunting the species you drew a permit for. Also, the season dates are much longer, so you’ll have more time to scout different places to harvest an animal.” – DWR Wildlife Licensing Coordinator Lindy Varney
Utahns must be 12 years old or older to apply for the big game Sportsman’s permits. However, there is no age limit for the turkey applicants.
Successful applicants will be notified on or around Nov. 17th. Most applicants will be notified via email. Those that did not submit an email can check the draw results by calling 1-800-221-0659.
