United States Fish and Wildlife Service violated the Endangered Species Act by allowing hunting of the only population of red wolves in North Carolina. U.S. Chief District Judge, Terrence W. Boyle ruled that because of USFWS’s internal policy changes and disregard for red wolf recovery guidelines set forth in 1999, this may negatively affect wolf recovery. Without proper management, by the USFWS the wild red wolf may be extinct by 2024. Judge Boyle’s ruling can be read here. Wolves appear to be more than just a western state issue.
