WOLF HUNTING IN WISCONSIN – Gray wolves have been in the state of Wisconsin for decades. Although rarely seen, the wolf population has grown to a fairly large number. As the number of wolves have risen, the opportunity to hunt them will be possible.
Wolves in Wisconsin
The gray wolf has been a resident of Wisconsin for many years. They have been protected under the endangered species act during this time. However, with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services planning to remove them from the list, wolf management plans will change.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services plan to remove wolves from the endangered species list on January 4th. According to a recent podcast published by Ehuntr, it may not happen on that date. There will possibly be lawsuits and other legal issues that will delay the delisting. However, it does look like they will come off of that list in the next year.
Although the gray wolf has been on the endangered species list, the Wisconsin Division of Natural Resources has had the challenge of managing these predators. Removing the wolves from the list will allow the DNR to manage in different way. One of which includes hunting.
Wolf Season 2021
The Wisconsin DNR recently released that there will be a wolf season in November of 2021. According to a recent study, wolves in Wisconsin have grown to over 1,000. 1,034 to be correct. That number is over the recommended population, and the Wisconsin DNR will use hunting as a tool to manage the numbers.
DNR officials said they plan to create a wolf management plan to “ensure sustainable management of Wisconsin wolves for the future.”
Wolf hunting will present a new opportunity for those in Wisconsin. It will give hunters the opportunity to help in the management and conservation of the species. Hunters will need to remember that wolves are still a managed species, and can only be taken with a legal license.
Do you think that hunting will manage the numbers, or will wolf numbers continue to grow in Wisconsin?
