A project has provided hunters with a new access point into a wilderness area in Wyoming. The new access point will provide hunters with access to a total of 32,900 acres of difficult to reach public land in the Sublette Mountain Range of Wyoming. The project will now allow quality access to the Raymond Mountain Wilderness Study Area as well as other state and federal lands.
“Creating and improving public access is key to who we are as an organization and our mission. There is currently limited access to the west side of the Sublette Range. This action will change that. – RMEF President and CEO Kyle Weaver.”
This project was set in motion by The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and The Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, as well as OnX also took part in the project. Aside from hunters, the access will be valuable for fisherman and other outdoor enthusiasts also. Likewise, this access point will help the WGFD better manage and monitor wildlife in the area.
“As the Wyoming Game and Fish Department evaluates and pursues access projects. We look for opportunities that will have a substantial positive impact for our constituents and we feel the Raymond Mountain Public Access Area will provide that. The department looks forward to developing this area for use by the public in the coming year and we want to thank RMEF and the other partners on this project for their hard work and support to make this opportunity happen.” – Game and Fish Lands Branch Chief Sean Bibbey.
It is the WGFD hope that they can find more crucial access points in the future. Along with their partners, the WGFD is committed to providing public access where they can.
Updated on 2/15/2021: Development on the easement will take effect during the summer of 2021. The current plan is to create a permanent roadway and parking lot just off of Highway 30. The roadway will connect from Highway 30 to the Groo Canyon trail.
